Emmaus has had a busy Fall and it has been awesome! We had our middle school retreat at Frontier Ranch, the Covenant’s Camp in Santa Cruz. Some of the girls in Emmaus attended Revolve, a conference for teenage girls hosted by Women of Faith. Along with the rest of the congregation we participated in the 40 Days of Community and covered each week’s topics when we hung out together on Wednesday nights.
Emmaus also participated in the
October Open Closet distribution and our students really had an incredible time serving! Looking ahead we want to see Emmaus have a much closer relationship with Open Closet. After this first
exposure, we want to see our students come and serve at Open Closet on their own or with their small groups. We also want the students to be involved in helping Open Closet with their huge Christmas distribution. After our time in Mexico this Summer and through ongoing involvement with Open Closet, we want our students to see the value of serving others and how God is able to work through us when we step up and focus on others!

What is Emmaus?

Emmaus Student Ministries seeks to help students see and understand God’s transforming grace, respond to Christ’s presence in their lives as He walks with them, and form friendships that move them along on their journey of faith.

We get our name from a story in the Bible, in the book of Luke 24:13-35.  This simple story takes place the first Easter afternoon. Jesus appears to two disciples who were walking together along the road from Jerusalem to Emmaus, and then joins them in their walk. As they walked along, Jesus explained to them the meaning of what was really going on.

When they arrived in Emmaus, Jesus “took bread, blessed and broke it, and gave it to them,” and their eyes were opened. They recognized Him as Jesus and they remembered how “their hearts had burned within them as they talked with Him on the road.” Within the hour, the two disciples left Emmaus and returned immediately to the other disciples in Jerusalem.  At the core of this great story is this verse from Luke 24:15, “While they were talking and discussing together, Jesus himself drew near and went with them.”  We think this verse serves as an incredible summary of all that will be taking place at Emmaus Student Ministries!

On the journey of faith, Emmaus Student Ministries is all about...

Response: understanding and fully reacting to God's love

Relationships:  being with each other as companions on the journey

Road-work: working to walk closer to Christ, step by step

What We Do...

Sunday Mornings - Middle School and High School (6th-12th)

Starting September 9th - 9:30 am to 11:00 pm at RCC

Sunday mornings in Room 28. We eat some sort of sugary goodness plus healthy bagels or of course the legendary Flapjacks! We’ll worship with the praise band and then split off into the middle school group and high school group to dig into God’s word. See ya there!

Wednesday Nights - Middle School Group (6th-8th)
6:00 to 7:30 pm at RCC

The middle school group hangs out on Wednesday nights. Every week will have pretty much the same structure with some big awesome fun stuff and then some small group discussion stuff. We hope to add some worship into the schedule each week too! And, as always, there will be food!

Wednesday Nights - High School Group (9th-12th)
7:00-9:00 pm at RCC

Our Wednesday night meetings are pretty cool. We spend a little bit of time goofing around and then focus in a bit with an awesome time of singing, a thought provoking talk and then end in small groups. The time in small groups is really the focus of the night.  In small groups, students discuss our topic for the night, encourage each other and have a little bit of fun together. We meet all year long on Wednesday nights from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m.

Thursday Nights - High School Group Studies (9th-12th)
7:00 pm

Come hang out, have fun and dig into God’s word at the separate high school guys and girls studies! We hang out Thursday evenings at 7 p.m. Give Nunan (528-8463, ext. 242) or Kristy (528-8463, ext. 233) a call to find out the location for the week!

Special Events

We also get to do some cool special activities and events in Emmaus Student Ministries.  For example, within the past couple years, we have had the opportunity to go to CHIC (a week-long gathering of high school students from Covenant churches) and on missions trips, retreats, and ski trips.  There are events and activities that take place almost every month with the whole group or just within the student small groups.  See our calendar below or read our monthly newsletter for all the information on what these events are and when they take place!

Our Sherpas

We know what you are thinking, “What in the world is a Sherpa?”  Well, Sherpas are world renown expert guides for mountaineering expeditions, specifically in the Himalayas.  We also have world renown guides in Emmaus ministries.  Our Sherpas are incredible adult volunteers who sacrifice their time and energy to minister to students.  Our Sherpas are committed to doing whatever it takes to help students grow in their personal friendships with God! Sherpas serve by interacting with students as they hang out with them, have fun with them and lead them in small group discussions.
